Wherever you are in the world...
Imagine your pasture being measured while you're busy farming.
Select a plan today.Say goodbye to regular pasture measurements and...
Say hello to automatic updates of your feed wedge with ZERO labour.
There are many pasture measuring devices.
Asides from our own satellite pasture measuring tech, we've put together some information and a summary to help you navigate which device is best for your use. This use is important to understand the benefits and limitations of pasture measuring tools. For example, if you're a scientist conducting scientific research, you might be best to choose the quadrant cut for high levels of accuracy. If you're not really looking to increase your pasture untilisation and animal performance, then the eye would perhaps meet your requirements fine (for the time being). C-Dax Pasture meters are quite common and are probably the pick of the tools that require physical labour to measure your pasture covers. Keep in mind that rising plate meters usually only measure a selection of the paddock via a transect that you walk or drive. If you'd like timely measurements with zero labour that give you an overall picture of what is going on across each of your paddocks, then look no further than our second to none satellite pasture measuring. The choice is yours, either way, looking forward to working with you.
Grass Measuring Devices   | Description | Benefits | Disadvantages | Score |
---|---|---|---|---|
No action | Do nothing at all, are you profitable? | None | A huge amount of lost opportunity | 0/10 Are you growing pasture? |
Eyeball technique | A visual assessment by driving or walking the farm | Quick, better than nothing | A great amount of lost opportunity | 1/10 Let's start measuring grass! |
Quadrant cut | Take multiple quadrant cuts with pasture shears & measure dry matter | Can be very precise, mainly used for research | Very slow and not suitable for commercial farms | 3/10 Reserved for the scientists |
Probe | Walk transects across paddocks taking pasture measurements | Hmmm not so sure on this grass measuring device, share your thoughts? | Problematic on wet days, slow, low amount of consistency | 4/10 Not a common tool for measuring grass |
Grassometer | Walk transects across paddocks taking multiple measurements | Potentially better than a rising plate meter, yet to be proven | Slow, operator fatigue, works on optical sensors | 5/10 Not a common grass measuring tool |
Rising plate meter | Measure grass, as you walk across paddocks | Close and thorough inspection of farm while walking, fairly consistent | Slow, operator fatigue and variability between operators | 6/10 Trusty grass measuring device |
Rapid plate meter | Towed plate that that rapidly measures grass height | New measuring device that looks promising, but needs further market testing | New measuring device that looks promising, but needs further market testing | 7/10 New and promising device for meausring pasture |
Pasture Reader | Vehicle mounted sensor for determining pasture height | Very quick and consistent on flat farms | Can be problematic on undulating farms | 8/10 Aussie developed pasture measuring device |
C-Dax pasture meter | 4wheeler towed sensor for determining pasture height | Very quick and consistent in dry conditions | Can be problematic in the wet, wear & tear | 8/10 Tried and tested pasture measuring tool |
Drone imagery | Flying drone that captures imagery for calculating grass growth | Daily pasture readings, other on-farm uses. | Flight regulations, adverse weather, batteries | 9/10 This technology is currently being researched |
Satellite imagery | Satellite imagery that captures grass measurements without the need of a person | Zero labour and other monitoring uses such as plant health | Minimal due to rapid tech advances | 10/10 Pasture.io has developed this technology |
